COLOMBIAN COMEDIAN 'RECEIVES THREATS´FOR FAT JOKES

A Colombian journalist claims via Twitter comedian and model Alejandra Azcarate received threats for making fun of overweight women in her weekly magazine column.
Director of adult magazine SoHo and columnist of newspaper Semana, Daniel Samper Ospina, tweeted Wednesday evening: "I know that they threaten @LaAzcarate, that they want to throw acid in her face and blind her: I express my solidarity with her."

CARTAGENA TO HOST CORPORATE TOURISM CONFERENCE

Colombia's northern coastal city Cartagena is likely to host an important corporate tourism conference next year.
"Successful Meeting of the Caribbean and the Islands" [SMCI] will bring together tourism businesses from Latin American, the Caribbean and North America. An estimated 6,500 people are expected to participate in the event held in October 2013.
Proexport, the government agency in charge of promoting tourism, pushed Cartagena as the host city of the conference and says SMCI decided on the tourist destination after an inspection of the city.

BOGOTA 5th MOST POPULAR TRAVEL DESTINATION IN LATIN AMERICA

Bogota is  the fifth most popular destination city in Latin America and the Caribbean, a study by global credit card company Mastercard showed Tuesday.
Travel to the Colombian capital grew 15.2% compared to 2011According to the credit card company's ranking, some 1.4 million people traveled to Bogota in 2011, almost half of top destination Sao Paulo.

MASSIVE TOMATO FIGHT RETURNS TO COLOMBIA

After an absence of two years, locals from a village in central Colombia were finally able to hold their massive tomato battle, known as "Tomatina" Sunday.


Some 20,000 people showed up for the sixth edition of the tomato-throwing festival in the town of Sutamarchan, some 75 miles northeast of the capital Bogota.


"This is a party in the honor of the tomato-cultivating farmer," the town mayor, Miguel Arturo Rodriguez, told The Associated Press.

Colombia news - Romeo Langlois

Colombia´s largest rebel group FARC said Saturday it plans to release Francois Langlois on Wednesday, little more than a month after the French journalist was captured in combat.
According to a short statement on a guerrilla webste,  "the coordinates of the place where Mister [Francois] Langlois will be released will be given to the humanitarian mission" formed by the Red Cross, former Senator Piedad Cordoba and a delegate of the French government.

Falcao practices with Colombia despite injury

Soccer phenom Radamel Falcao practiced with Colombia's national team Thursday despite a hamstring injury that threatens to sideline him for the country's upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

 

Team trainers are hoping that the superstar will be able to play in Colombia's World Cup qualifying matches against Peru June 3 and Ecuador June 10.
Rumors have surfaced recently that the 26 year old player has garnered interest from English powerhouse and UEFA Champion's League winners, Chelsea F.C. Falcao has reiterated his desire to stay with Atletico Madrid, winners of this year's Europa League final.
"El Tigre," as he is affectionately known, had a career campaign, scoring 36 goals in his debut season for the Spanish club.


'FARC member' arrested in defused Bogota car bomb case

Colombian authorities arrested a man allegedly responsible for a car bomb that was defused May 15 in front of Bogota's police headquarters. His name is Ruben Dario Hoyos Rengifo, alias "Ruben" or alias "El Mocho,"  suspected of being a member of the FARC's 17th Front. 

The police suspect that he was coordinating this failed bomb and  other terrorist attacks including the October bombing of a dental clinic in Bogota that killed 2 explosives technicians from the city's police force.

Police arrested another man involved in the plot May 16. Jesus Antonio Monroy Alvarez is suspected of parking the car as a decoy for the terrorist attack that was carried out hours later in Bogota's financial district Alvarez allegedly has ties to the FARC's now-demobilized 7th Front. He pled guilty to charges of manufacturing and transporting illegal weapons and was sentenced to two years in prison.
